New Bubinga

Bubinga

An immensely popular imported African hardwood, Bubinga may be loved as much for its quirky name as it is for its strength and beauty. Also sometimes called Kevazingo, usually in reference to its decorative rotary-cut veneer.

Bubinga has a close resemblance to rosewood, and is often use in place of more expensive woods. Yet Bubinga also features a host of stunning grain figures, such as flamed, pommele, and waterfall, which make this wood truly unique. Bubinga also has an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio.

New Arrival. 4/4 x 6″ and wide x 3′-5′.

These magnificent slabs are a rarity these days.

What makes these slabs extraordinary is that they are figured, logsawn and sequential. The smalls of the slabs is from the outermost of the tree and the largest is from the more centered part of the tree.

The White sapwood on the edges is highlighted by the gorgeous red figure of the heartwood.

Indian Laurel

Indian Laurel is a new species for us. There is something very interesting in the grain that is subtle yet striking.

Comes in 3 x 3 x 12 and 3 x 6 x 6 blanks.

Varies from light brown to dark brown with darker, nearly black streaks. Sapwood is a pale pinkish color, clearly demarcated from the heartwood.

Zircote

2 x 2 Zircote
Zircote

For me, Zircote is some of the coolest looking wood around.

We commonly carry 2 x 2 blanks for wood turners.

“Color ranges from medium to dark brown, sometimes with either a green or purple hue, with darker bands of black growth rings intermixed. Ziricote has a very unique appearance, which is sometimes referred to as “spider-webbing” or “landscape” grain figure. Quartersawn surfaces can also have ray flakes similar in appearance to those found on quartersawn Hard Maple. The pale yellowish sapwood is sometimes incorporated into designs for aesthetic effect, or to cut down on wastage.”

“A truly unique-looking wood, Ziricote has very few imitators; perhaps only the occasional piece of figured Brazilian Rosewood exhibits the same spider-webbing grain figure.”

Battleship USS North Carolina (BB-55) Original Teak Pen Blanks

My father was instrumental in the facilitation of the donation of the teak wood from the government of Burma which lead to the re-decking the entire ship. (10 truck loads of 2-1/2″ Teak). We dried and milled all of the replacement teak at our facility in Wilmington prior to its installation.

We personally inspected and chose this salvaged original decking. Certificate of authenticity available.

Pen Blanks and Large Planks available.

Logsawn Figured Bubinga

Logsawn Figured Bubinga. This is from a set of three. I applied a thin coat of shellac to highlight the figure. The logs were hand picked by my brother and sawn in Germany under his direction. Bubinga has recently been put on the C.I.T.E.S list so don’t expect to see a whole lot more imported into the country. 2″ thick x 31″ at widest at the base x 82″ long. $2000 + Shipping and crating costs.
